Claire Dearing

Personality: Claire is a career business woman; Type A personality workaholic. When we first see her, she's riding an elevator alone and repeating names and descriptions of three investors she's about to meet, noting to herself that she's three minutes late, and putting on a smile regardless when the door opens. When she rides the helicopter with park owner Masrani to see the Indominus Rex, she's trying to focus on delivering park operation notes, financial advisories, and general day-to-day business regarding running a theme park/specialized zoo. Masrani's laid-back demeanor; cutting her off, insisting she relax is a stark contrast to her realist approach about the subject matter.  

She doesn't do relaxation or hobbies well, and even interpersonal relationships are hard;  for living on a south pacific island that gets plenty of sun, in a job that takes her to many corners of the park, it's clear she doesn't spend much time outside. Masrani comments on it directly, telling her to visit the beach and get some sun. On a date with Owen Grady, one of the park's dinosaur trainers, Claire brought a printed itinerary. When meeting up with her nephews it's revealed that this is the first time she's seen them in seven years, and her awkward conversation about 'what time do you go to bed, or do you go to bed at different times ... ?'  tells us she doesn't spend much time around kids. She is prone to a blind loyalty to her superiors and has made some poor decisions on their behalf, and in general can be cold and aloof with others. Under the surface, however, she does care, shown in her actions when the people she cares about are in trouble.

Which brings us to her personal motto; 'opportunity without limitation' speaks to her determination to succeed despite the obstacles. It's given her the ability to be quick thinking and decisive under pressure. Despite her business demeanor, when the going gets tough she's more than willing to push her sleeves back and get a little dirty (literally). When her nephews go missing and the park's emergency services aren't able to go after them immediately, she enlists the help of Owen Grady to help track them down. When it's discovered the boys delved deeper into the park, she insists on accompanying Grady to get them back; what happens next is a race through intense jungle, facing massive rogue predators, and dangerous terrain. She follows Grady through all of it, in heels, while conferring with the park's control center via cell phone to ensure the rest of the park's guests and employees are safely evacuated. In the heat of the moment she's proven to be extremely resourceful, using firearms, a van, and a flare in order to save people and take out attacking dinos, either through her own actions (such as firing on a Dimorphedon that was attacking Grady, or veering the van into a chasing Velociraptor to shove it into a tree), or redirecting others (when she used a flare to direct direct Rexy into chasing her and then engaging with the Indominus).

Given the nature of the disaster she experienced, she is given a perspective on outward empathy (of both human and animal) and a greater appreciation for enjoying the moment. While she and Grady are following her nephews' trail, they come to a valley of Apatasaurs that the Indominus had killed for sport'. While previously Claire had treated these animals as 'assets' and what they could offer or what they were costing the park (such as asking how quickly a Pachycephalosaurus could be moved after it was tranquilized when found wandering outside of its territory), sitting with an Apatasaur in its final moments gives her a personal experience with the fact that they are feeling thinking creatures. 

Canon Powers: HBIC, Runs in Heels

Game powers: Can summon a spectral Tyrannosaurus Rex, specifically Big Momma Rexy from the first and fourth movies; large, wizened, and scarred. Once summoned, Claire has limited control over Rexy; less overall control and more power of suggestion. She can, however, cancel the summons at any time, but won't be able to summon Rexy again until she's rested 6-8 hours.

Abilities: Organized, ambitious, self-starter, basically the embodiment of business resume buzzwords

Setting: Claire is going to take to the Legion like a fish to water. She'll probably try to take over some PR position or work towards an upper level management position, or find a way to create one if that's not available, or just do the work anyway because what is downtime.

Prose Sample: This is the part of maintaining a business that Claire Dearing disliked the most; the kind of event that required her to mingle, mix, and schmooze with investors and shareholders; the people with the money to back the project but no real understanding of what goes on at the base level. She smiles, she chit chats, she grins and bears it and looks everyone in the eye as they're introduced and recites their name and internally makes herself little catchphrases to help remember faces. It's just part of the job.

     And when she has someone dissenting, she smiles there too. It's not a warm smile, but it's as pleasant as she can make it. These are careful waters to traverse and she takes a moment to let his words hang in the air before replying.

    "I'm sorry you feel that way, sir, but I can assure you; it is my goal to serve Coluan, as all the United Planets. We all deserve safety and a peace of mind, don't you agree?"

   A saccharine smile that hopefully appeals to his senses, as she feels the unease in her own stomach. She takes a sip from her wine as she waits for an answer ... or, an opening to politely dismiss herself from the conversation and continue on with her night. 

Your character is with the team at a fancy diplomatic party and a UP dignitary (a Coluan, naturally, because man, the entire planet of Colu seems to be chock full of arrogant dicks) has called into question the character's ability to be a Legionnaire and whether or not they, some weirdo interdimensional stranger, have the personal character to help protect the United Planets. How do they respond?

Network Sample: This is Claire Dearing, recording personal message to future self, log number 15. [She includes the date and local time, and then a brief pause,]; I've now been part of the Legion for a solid week. 

It's been ... different. Getting used to aliens, a whole new dimension, the advanced technology has been a challenge; I thought it was hard keeping all of Earth's regional customs in mind. How do you introduce yourself to someone who has specific cultural greetings based on selectively released pheromones? I had an embarrassing moment when a dignitary offered me their tail to shake in greeting, or so I thought. Turns out it was a third eyeball.

[She sighs and leans back in her chair, reaching a hand up to pinch the bridge of her nose.] Patrolling, weapons training, that was Owen's specialty. It's not like I don't know my way around a gun but that's not what I would prefer to be doing.

Give me some bookkeeping, at the very least. Give me a department to lead. This might be an alien world but I know I could dominate.

Welcome to the Legion, rookie. As a way of helping your character cope with their circumstances and have an optimistic outlook towards the future, the existing Legionnaires want them to record a message to their future self with their thoughts on their current situation, what they hope to accomplish in their time with the Legion, and the first thing they want to do when they get sent safely home or to the dimension of their choice.

Additional info: I would like to RP her first training session where she learns about her power, either with an NPC or Legionnaire.
